Jonathan Delafield Cook | Ten Cubed Exhibition Extended

Such is the popularity of the work of Jonathan Delafield Cook that his exhibition at Ten Cubed gallery in Melbourne has been extended until the 12th of March.

The precision of his drawings are a result of his background in architecture, an area in which he studied and worked in before becoming an artist. In the artist’s words his objective is ‘to elevate the drawing, which has traditionally been seen as the preparatory study to the primary master work.’ Testaments to his skills in observation and discipline, these works are best viewed up close and in person so as to best appreciate the talent and effort involved in their creation.

After several years living in England, Jonathan has recently returned to Australia for 2015. Ten Cubed will be holding drinks at the gallery on Tuesday the 17th of February in order to celebrate both his arrival and this remarkable exhibition.

Jonathan Delafield Cook | Exhibition at Ten Cubed Collection

Jonathan Delafield Cook’s work is currently the subject of an exhibition as part of the Ten Cubed Collection in Melbourne. Originally studying and working as an architect, his exquisitely precise charcoal drawings are testaments to observation, investigation and illustration.

“His work can be seen as a form of enquiry that asks rather than answers questions. Above all he is engaged in creating works of art for their graphic, abstract or tonal potential.” – Ten Cubed Gallery

These drawings make up part of the Ten Cubed Collection, an ‘art experiment’ invested in collecting the artworks of an ever evolving ‘top ten’ group of contemporary artists over ten years.

Jonathan Delafield Cook | Crikey Daily Review

Patricia Anderson, one of Australia’s foremost art critics, has reviewed Jonathan Delafield Cook’s current exhibition of new drawings for Crikey’s Daily Review.

Anderson heralds a renaissance of realism, out from under the shadows of conceptual art and installation, and celebrates Jonathan Delafield Cook’s work for being not just “a dazzling work of art” but also a meticulously crafted “forensic study”.

Of the 12 metre long charcoal on linen Sperm Whale II, Anderson describes, “The whole history of this sleek creature, a large-brained, long-living  predator with few natural enemies, is written like graffiti on his skin. The abrasions, the exfoliations, scars and ragged tail remind us that deep-sea adventures are not all plain sailing.”
Patricia Anderson, Crikey

“Cook’s skill and precision are astounding, particularly considering that his drawings are executed in charcoal – a notoriously unforgiving medium. A combination of direct observation, often from museum specimens, and photographic references inform Cook’s work. His notations of flora and fauna border on scientific, with form and texture impeccably reproduced against clean white grounds.” – Raven

Jonathan Delafield Cook | Studio Visit

On his recent trip to the UK Rex Irwin visited Jonathan Delafield Cook in his studio ahead of his upcoming exhibition at Olsen Irwin. These images gives us a sneak peak of what to expect from the show in December of this year. We begin to see Delafield Cook’s remarkable attention to detail even when working on such an immense scale.  The mastery and command of his medium, charcoal, simply leaves one awestruck and amazed. Delafield Cook’s exhibition will run from 11 December to 25 January at Olsen Irwin.
