Jo Bertini | Finalist | Calleen Art Award and Central West Regional Art Award

Jo Bertini has been named as a finalist in the Calleen Art Award and Central West Regional Art Award to be exhibited at Cowra Regional Gallery from 4 May to 15 June 2014. Bertini won the 2013 Central West Regional Art Award for her work Wongitta Wadi Gold – pictured below.

Judge of the 2013 award, deputy director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Anne Flanagan, commended Bertini’s work, saying, “Jo’s large, square painting has a magic to it. The bright blue sky is like a ribbon that holds the animated brush stokes in place. The brush strokes move quickly across the canvas and are filled with all the warmth of the desert landscape – pink, ochre, yellow, red and a tantalizing orange that fills the foreground. The painting is carried out with confident speed and yet, as in the tradition of the oil sketch, has a keen descriptive quality.” – Anne Flanagan, Deputy director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales

Cowra Regional Gallery will also host a solo exhibition of Bertini’s work in October 2014.

Olsen Irwin | Sydney Contemporary Success

2013’s inaugural Sydney Contemporary art fair has drawn to a close with galleries, artists, collectors and the public happy all round. The four day affair from 19 – 22 September was full of great discoveries, surprises and people! The opening night quite literally stopped traffic – proving that the art scene in Sydney is as vibrant as ever.

Tim Olsen, director of Olsen Irwin, reported to Clive Paget of Limelight Magazine, “Sales have been extremely strong, defying the climate on the street,”… “After the first day of the fair we had at least 30 new faces in our stand that we’d never met before. Our experience has exceeded expectations – we’ve found it to be a vibrant event that was also a commercial success.” – Limelight Magazine
